Waikato

Balloons over HamiltonThe Waikato region is the fourth largest region in New Zealand, covering 25,000 square kilometres of the central North Island.

The natural environment in the Waikato supports its people, culture and economy.

The natural resources and climate encourage many primary producing industries such as farming, forestry, energy and mining. These produce about 43 percent of Waikato's Gross Domestic Product.

Waikato FallsThe Waikato region has more than 100 lakes, ranging from small lakes to the largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Taupo. The region contains a diverse range of native plants and animals and, like most of New Zealand, has an excellent water and air quality.

Due to the regions largely natural environment, there is a strong culture within the region to conserve the natural resources and environment. In fact, in a recent survey more than half of the residents in the Waikato region were taking action in their daily lives to help care for the environment.

The Waikato region consists of a number of towns and cities. A few of which are Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Paeroa, Waihi, Morrinsville, Matamata, Taupo and Turangi.
