The Bay of Plenty Region covers an area of 13,000 square kilometres and has a population of over 240,000 (2001 Census).
Situated on the coast of New Zealand, there are a large number of beach areas and 18 off-shore islands within the region.
Traditionally, the Bay of Plenty region is full of summer beach destinations, or rural townships. However, over the past years the Bay of Plenty has experienced huge growth with more permanent residents entering the area.
The Bay of Plenty region is still renowned for its small rural townships with kiwifruit, avocados and other orchard type fruit grown in abundance.
From the early settlements in the area to the new industrial areas of Tauranga - diversity is found everywhere.
It is a region rich in natural and physical resources, which makes it a great place to live, work and visit.
The Bay of Plenty includes a number of towns and cities, some of which are Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, Katikati, Te Puna, Bethlehem, Welcome Bay, Whakatane, Ohope and Rotorua.
Tauranga: Tauranga is a growing city in the heart of the Bay of Plenty region with many new housing suburbs opening up. Water is never far away from the Tauranga locals; many boats enjoy the inner harbour waters and surf is never far away. People come to live in Tauranga for ‘the lifestyle’ and it is often referred to as “the Coast with the Most".
Whakatane: The middle of the Bay, it is steeped in history and a great beach over the hill at Ohope.
Te Puke: Just 32 km's south of Tauranga on the road to Opotiki and Rotorua, Te Puke is the centre of a large area of fruit and crop growing, hailed as the Kiwifruit capital of the world.
Katikati: A little north-west of Tauranga, Katikati is also a centre of fruit and crop growing. It is known as the “mural town” with may fine murals dotted through the town.
Waihi Beach: A long picturesque stretch of white sand with walkways, parks and scenic sights. This is all part of the Waihi Beach menu.
Mount Maunganui: The town is a popular tourist resort and the feeling is friendly and relaxed. The weather in Mount Maunganui is warm in summer and cool in winter. This is the place to be over the Christmas and New Years Eve period if you're after a good time.
Papamoa Beach: Papamoa Beach with its popular north facing sandy beach is one of NZ's most sought after residential & holiday destinations. New shopping centres & community facilities are popping up to service the huge growth of this Tauranga city beach suburb.

Rotorua: The heartland of New Zealand's Maori culture, Rotorua is one of the only geothermally active areas remaining in New Zealand. With 11 major lakes, the Rotorua region is also one of the country's prime trout fishing spots. Activities and attractions abound, with something to satisfy everyone from sightseeing to adrenaline pumping adventure options.
