Gisborne – Is the first city in the world to see the sun each day and one of the sunniest places in New Zealand.
The Gisborne district has a population of 45,000 with about 30,000 residing in the city. Summers are generally warm and winters mild. A Mediterranean climate and suitable soils is the reason why Gisborne is one of New Zealand's largest grape growing regions, producing award winning exquisite tasting wines of an international standard.
The district is also ideal for growing maize, citrus and subtropical fruits. Much of the district is hill country with grazing of sheep, cattle, deer and goats, and plantings of pine forests.
The East Cape coastal road gives access to a wild but picturesque coastline popular for fishing and diving.
