The Wairarapa as a whole varies considerably in its climatic extremes with wind flow, sunshine hours and rainfall all depending on proximity to the Rimutaka Ranges to the south and the Tararua Ranges to the west. Masterton

Masterton is located in the heart of the Wairarapa region of New Zealand. It is an hour's drive from both Wellington and Palmerston North.

Masterton District comprises one large urban town with a population of some 18,000 people and a diverse rural district totalling some 5,000 people. Rural districts include the coastal resorts of Castlepoint and Riversdale, the strong farming communities of Tinui, Wainuioru and Mauriceville and large tracts of forestry on the eastern hill country.

Carterton

Carterton district is bounded by the Waiohine River to the south and the Waingawa River to the north and stretches from the Tararua Ranges to the west and to the Pacific Ocean to the east.

Wairarapa Balloon FestivalMt Holdsworth situated in the Carterton district is the main entry point into the Tararua Forest Park. The Waiohine Gorge also situated in Carterton gives access to the Tararuas and has the longest swing bridge of its type in New Zealand.

Dannevirke

Dannevirke is situated near the foothills of the Ruahine Ranges. Dannevirke was settled by Scandinavian immigrants who came to a settlement located in the midst of a giant Totara Forest known as Seventy Mile Bush. The name Dannevirke means 'Danes' work'.

With changes to farming patterns and the economy, Dannevirke has changed too, apart from being a servicing centre for a dairying and sheep-farming district it has now become a popular stopping point for visitors.

South Wairarapa

Martinborough WinerysThe South Wairarapa  District includes the towns of Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough which are the main population centres.

The South Wairarapa District is situated at the southern most corner of the North Island and has an area of approximately 248,455 hectares (2484 square kilometres).

In the south, the district boundary follows the coastline from the western end of Palliser Bay in Cook Strait to Honeycomb Rock, east of Martinborough. The western boundary follows the main divide of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges to Mount Hector, from which the boundary runs southeast across the Wairarapa Plains to the coast.
